Make a transparent background PNG
A transparent background PNG is a picture with an alpha channel: every pixel carries how opaque it is, so the subject can sit on any colour without a rectangle around it. The tool below writes one from a photo you drop in, at the size you put in, free.

JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. Up to about 4000 × 4000 pixels. Why PNG and not JPG
JPG has no alpha channel at all. Saving a cut-out as a JPG fills the transparent part with a colour, usually white, which is how a logo ends up with a pale box around it on a dark slide. PNG stores transparency per pixel, including the partial transparency along a soft edge, and that is what makes a cut-out look like it belongs where you put it. WebP can do it too; PNG is the one everything opens.
Check it before you use it
The result above can be viewed on a checkerboard, on white and on black. That is not decoration: a cut-out that looks clean on white can show a bright fringe on black, and the other way round, and the only way to know is to look. Switch between the three before you download and you will see the edge the way your slide, listing or sticker is going to show it.
Where a transparent PNG is the right file
A product on a marketplace listing that insists on its own background. A logo over a photo, a signature on a contract, a face in a presentation, a sticker, a sprite, a die-cut print. Anywhere what sits behind the subject is not yours to decide, a transparent PNG is the file that leaves the decision to whoever places it.
Questions people ask
Does the PNG keep the original resolution?
Yes. The file you download is the size you put in, with no watermark and no downscaled preview step in between.
Why does my transparent PNG look like it has a white background?
Most image viewers draw transparency as white, so a correct file can look wrong on your own desktop. Open it over something dark, or use the on-black preview in the tool above, and you will see whether the transparency is actually there.
Can I get the subject on a solid colour instead?
The preview above shows it on white and on black, and the download is always the transparent version — put that on whatever colour you like in whatever you are building. That is the point of keeping the alpha channel.
