How it works

Pick an image

Drag a file onto the page, paste from the clipboard, or choose one from your device. Nothing is sent anywhere — the file is read straight into the page.

The model runs on your device

A segmentation model decides, pixel by pixel, what is subject and what is background. It downloads once, then your browser keeps it, so the second image is fast.

Save the PNG

You get the cut-out at the resolution you put in, with a real alpha channel — ready for a slide, a product listing, a poster or a sticker.

Why this one is different

The free pass keeps your picture on your device

Most background removers upload your file to a server before they will do anything. The free pass here does not — the model runs in the tab, and the picture is never part of a request. That matters for a passport photo, a contract, a child, a product you have not launched yet, or anything covered by GDPR. The optional server pass is the one thing on this site that does upload, and it only ever runs when you press it.

Free where it costs us nothing

The in-browser cut-out runs on your hardware, not ours, so it has no cost to recover and no reason to ever be metered. There is one paid extra — a bigger model running on our servers, offered after you have seen the free result — and it is priced at what that inference actually costs us.

Full resolution, real transparency

No watermark, no downscaled preview, no "upgrade for HD". The PNG you download is the size you uploaded, with a genuine alpha channel.

No subscription, and nothing expires

The complaint people write about background removers is always the same shape: they signed up to buy a few cut-outs, a monthly fee they never asked for came off the card, and whatever credits were left died when they cancelled. Cutout has no subscription to cancel. The in-browser cut-out is free and unlimited with no account at all, so there is nothing to expire and nothing to forget to turn off.

If you ever buy Lumen for the optional server pass, they are a one-off purchase and they do not expire — and they work in every Pixygon tool, not just this one.

What it costs

Free

In your browser — the one most people need

Unlimited cut-outs, full resolution, no watermark, no account and no subscription — and the image never leaves your device. It runs on your own hardware, so it costs us nothing and it will not start costing you anything later.

Optional

The server pass — for the hard ones

A much larger model on our model provider's GPUs, for the images the in-browser one finds difficult: flyaway hair, fur, thin edges. It is offered next to your free result, so you only pay once you can see what you would be improving. This tier does send the image — to our server and on to fal.ai, which holds it and the result for up to an hour and is set to delete both after that.

Lumen are the Pixygon-wide wallet, so a pack works in every Pixygon tool. Buying needs an account; the free cut-out never does.

Questions people ask

Is the image really not uploaded?

Really — for the free in-browser pass, which is the one that runs when you drop an image on the page. Open your browser's network tab while you use it: the only downloads are the page and the model file, and there is no upload at all. The image is read with the browser's own file API and stays in the tab's memory until you close it. The paid server pass is the exception, and the only one: it does send the image to our server, and it never runs unless you ask for it.

Why is the first image slow?

The first run downloads the segmentation model, about 45 MB. Your browser caches it, so every image after that starts immediately. On a machine with WebGPU the cut-out itself usually takes a second or two.

What kinds of images does it handle?

People, pets, products, furniture, plants, food — anything with a clear subject. Very fine detail like flyaway hair or a chain-link fence is where every model, including this one, gets approximate.

Can I use the result commercially?

Yes. The cut-out is your image and we claim nothing in it — and with the free in-browser pass we never see it at all. The model is the open-source Open Remove Background Model, under the Apache-2.0 licence.

Does it work on a phone?

On a recent phone, yes, though the model download is a real 45 MB and an older device may run out of memory on a very large photo. Scaling a huge photo down before you start usually fixes that.

What is the paid server pass, and do I need it?

Almost certainly not. The free in-browser pass handles most photos, and it is the one that never uploads anything. The paid pass sends the image to our server and runs a much larger model there, which tends to win on hair, fur and thin edges. It is offered next to your free result so you can see what you would be improving, and it costs Lumen — the Pixygon-wide wallet — because that inference has a real bill attached.
