A free alternative to remove.bg — no credits, no preview-only download
The usual way people end up looking for an alternative is mid-job: twenty product shots to cut out, and the counter runs out at image seven. Or the cut-out on screen is perfect and the download button wants a subscription for anything above preview size. Both are deliberate product decisions, and they make sense for a service paying for GPUs. They are also avoidable, if the work happens on your machine instead.

Server inference. Cutout loads an open segmentation model into your browser and runs it there. The provider cost becomes zero, so there is nothing to meter: no credits, no quota, no resolution cap, no watermark, no account. The trade is the first run — about 45 MB of model to download before the first image, cached from then on — and that your own hardware does the work, so an old phone is slower than a data-centre GPU.
Where the paid services are still the better answer
Volume automation is theirs. If you need a thousand images cut out nightly by a script, you want an API with a service level, not a browser tab. They also tune their models continuously and often handle hair and fur better than an open model does. And some offer extras — background replacement libraries, bulk editors, team accounts — that a single-purpose page deliberately does not.
A fair way to compare them
Take three images you actually care about: one person, one product on a plain background, one hard case with hair or mesh. Run all three through both. Look at the edges at full size rather than in a preview, and check that the download really is the resolution you put in. For most listing photos, slides and stickers the difference will not be visible; for the hard case it may be, and then you know what you are paying for.
