How to remove the background from a scanned signature or a logo
A signature scanned on a home printer arrives as dark ink on a grey-white rectangle, and dropped into a document it shows up as a visible box. A logo pulled off a slide deck has the same problem. Both want the same fix — a real transparent background — but a scan of ink on paper behaves differently from a photograph, and knowing that saves a lot of retries.
Why a scan is its own case
A photograph has a subject with depth and edges that a segmentation model is trained to find. A scan is flat: thin dark strokes on a nearly-uniform light field, often with paper texture, a shadow along one edge and a slight colour cast. There is no "subject" in the photographic sense, which is why some cut-out tools do a poor job on signatures and a good one on people.
Getting a clean scan to start with
Sign in black ink on white, unlined paper, with a thicker pen than you would normally use — a fine ballpoint scans faint. Use a scanner at its higher-quality setting rather than photographing the page; if you must photograph it, do so in flat daylight with the phone parallel to the paper so there is no perspective and no shadow. Crop tight to the signature before you do anything else.
Cutting it out
Drop the cropped scan into Cutout and it returns the strokes with the paper gone, as a transparent PNG at full resolution. Check it on the black preview: on white, a leftover grey haze is invisible, and on black it is obvious. If the strokes look thin or broken, the original scan was too faint — a heavier pen fixes it far better than any amount of processing.
Where the file should and should not go
Your signature image is sensitive. A browser-based tool matters here for a concrete reason: the file never leaves your device, so there is no copy of your signature sitting in a stranger’s processing queue. Keep the PNG somewhere you control, and think about who you send documents containing it to. For a logo, the question is different and simpler: make sure you actually have the right to use it.
